7 Steps To Staying Focused

We have a tendency to lose our edge every once in a while.  It might be in our relationships, with our work, or perhaps with our commitment to serving others.  For some reason, we can feel almost lost.  In going through this process it is good to know that 1) it is normal and 2) it won’t last forever.  But there is a bright side to all of this.  If we are able to navigate successfully through this season, we’ll come out even better and more passionate at the other end.  Here are some key steps which may help along the way.

Review– This is the only part where we can feel sorry for ourselves.  This is where we can assess where we are and how we got here.  Take some time doing this either with a trusted friend or when you have some quiet time alone.

Reduce– Minimize clutter from your life.  Sometimes we are unable to find clarity on the issues with piles of stuff around.  This refers to both a mental as well as a physical activity.  We might even have to reduce our schedule and/or delegate things that are non-essential.

Return to Core Values– Reconnect with the principles we live our life by.  These principles govern the way we make decisions and conduct life.

Realize Changes– Assess how the environment around us has changed.  Are there people who have moved on or others who have entered the picture?  Perhaps we have changed and need to take this into account.

Redesign– Adjust for changes in our circumstances and the environment around us.  Write a life plan which encompasses our current status, our ideal life, likes, skills, track record, work goals, and purpose.

Recommit– Once there is clarity, recommit to the life plan.

Revive– The beauty of being human is that we have the ability to be passionate about life.  Revive those emotions that drive us to accomplish our goals.  Steward this fire and we’ll stay focused for years to come.
