How Do I Fix Sagging Sofa Cushions?

How Do I Fix Sagging Sofa Cushions?

Do you notice that each time you sit down on your sofa, you sink deeper and deeper into it? Since sofas are expensive you probably don’t want to run out and buy a new one. Here are some ways to fix sagging sofa cushions without going to extreme measures.

First though, here are some preventative steps to keep cushions from becoming saggy in the first place.

• When buying a sofa think about how it will be used and choose accordingly. Cushions come in down-and-feather blends, spring-down, foam, or a combination of the three. Down cushions require constant fluffing, while foam springs back on its own.

• Avoid flopping down on the couch, and don’t let children jump on it.

• Rotate the cushions regularly.

• If possible, move the couch to different spots in the room every once in a while. This may encourage people to sit on different sides of the sofa.

Eventually, no matter what, time will take its toll and you sofa cushions will start to sag. The first thing to do is to inspect the sofa carefully to make sure the problem is isolated to the cushions and it’s not a problem with the sofa frame. Once you’ve determined that it is the cushions, there are a few things you can do.

Add or Replace Foam

It may be that the foam in the cushions needs to be replaced or made thicker. Most couch cushions have a zipper so it isn’t too difficult to fix. Just unzip and add layers of foam to the top and bottom of the cushion.

Use Plywood

One of the easiest ways to firm up a sagging sofa cushion is to place a piece of plywood between the cushion and the sofa. This isn’t the most comfortable solution, nor is it permanent, but it is a quick fix that will temporarily solve the problem. Or you could purchase a product specifically designed for this problem. Known as seat savers, they are collapsible boards covered in vinyl and you use them the same way you would a piece of plywood.

Is it Time for a New Sofa?

If the sofa is really badly worn, think about replacing it. One of the temporary fixes should hold you over until you can get out and find a new one. Don’t invest too much in cushions if the frame is in bad shape.

Fix or Replace Sooner Rather Than Later

No matter what, if you find that your sofa cushions are sagging, make sure to get them fixed or replaced. Not only is it uncomfortable for you, it can be bad for your back if you don’t have the right support
